I took a break from the garden and the desk last Sunday to cycle from London to Brighton in aid of the British Heart Foundation. 4 of us set off at 6am with 25 thousand other riders to enjoy almost 54 miles of cycling without the interruption of cars and fumes. The sun came out for us and the countryside was absolutely glorious. Spending most of my time trying to create small havens of solitude and enjoyment in London, I often forget the natural beauty that surrounds us inside and outside the M25.
I am becoming a bit of a bike evangelist now and am hoping to find possibilities of cycling to my garden projects when I don't need to deliver materials or tools. Most of my work is within a 6 mile radius of Barnes so based on last weekend's endeavour there is nothing stopping me visiting several sites in one day. Easy does it, I will start with cycling to Putney and see if it works. At least I will save on parking permits and / or tickets.
I will give you an update on my cycling commitment later in the summer. I will see if I can really make it work first!
And if you really want to you can still sponsor us after the event (until November 2008) at http://www.justgiving.com/barnesbikers
